Two squadron’s of Stuart’s cavalry along with Beckham’s guns were sent after McDowell’s main column heading toward Sudley Ford. However, "Sykes Battalion”, Palmer’s Cavalry Battalion, one section of Arnold’s Battery, and two guns from Reynolds’s Rhode Island Battery made a stand powerful enough to prevent Stuart from a too vigorous pursuit. Eventually, Arnold spiked and abandoned his guns at Cub Run.Stuart eventually halted for the night near the Sudley Methodist Church. However, Munford’s Cavalry Battalion of two squadrons of the 30th Virginia and three independant cavalry companies crossed later at Sudley Ford. As Munford’s horseman approached the Warrenton Turnpike they were fired on from the woods. Mistaking Kershaw’s command and the Alexandria Light Artillery for the enemy, Munford fell back but later continued to Cub Run. McDowell’s forces ultimately crossed Bull Run going back the way they had come. Purcell, Latham, Richardson, and Pendleton’s Batteries shelled the retreating bluecoats from northwest of ”Portici”.
